Is there a way to externally identify what version a PS3 is I think I can rule out the 20 and 40 if it has 4 USB ports and a flash card reader, but not the 80.

I helped a friend of mine un-ban his PS3 a few months ago by buying a CID off of eBay from this guy because he seemed really reputable - and it worked great. If you check the sidebar there is a link to a person that sells them - but his last post was in December so I'm not sure if he's still active. In order to get a new CID to un-ban your system you'll have to buy a new one off of someone else that has extracted them from another PS3 (typically a broken one that will never be used online again.)
